The FABulous Knights Story

Our FabSLAM

Adventure

Our Adventure with FabSLAM started with coming up with a name for our team. We decided to make our name from the word FAB for fabrication, but we wanted to be awesome. So, we came up with the FABulous Knights to still use our school mascot name. After that, we had to decide on a project to do and the theme is Cities. We decided that we wanted to design a skate park to go in the old tennis courts at the community center. No one uses them and there is very little for us to do in our little town. We are out in the country and have no movies or arcades or anywhere for kids to go have fun together. A skate park would have a lot of positive benefits for our town. We did some research to prove to the city why the skatepark we designed would be a great thing for them to help us fundraise for. We know we are only in 8th grade, but we want to do this as a Senior Project if no one does it before that. We did a lot of research and work into the design we wanted and if it was made out of concrete where it would last and be easy to upkeep, kids could really enjoy this for many years to come. Maybe even our kids someday.

Reasons Plummer needs a skatepark:

1. Skateparks, if designed and constructed right, are pretty inexpensive and require little maintenance.

2. Skateboarders are currently under served in our area and there are more and more kids who want to be able to skate.

3. Skateparks provide a safe place for kids to spend time and have fun.

4. With all of the health issues hurting youth, especially native youth on our reservation, like obesity, heart disease and diabetes, offering kids a variety of healthy, athletic choice is important.

5. The low or no cost of participating makes a skatepark accessible to everyone.

6. Thousands of other communities have proven the value of skateparks.

7. Skating in a designated park is so much safer than skating in the streets like kids do now. There is danger from cars and traffic and there is danger to other people when skateboarders are flying around where they are walking.

8. Our community has lots of kids who skateboard, with nowhere to skateboard.

9. Skateparks can displace other less desirable activities in our community, like loitering and causing problems, picking on other kids, drug activities, vandalism, or theft.

10. A skatepark can be attractive for family outings.

11. People of all ages can enjoy a skatepark, not just kids.

12. Others cities have found that skateparks upport vibrant, healthy communities, just like other athletic facilities.

13. Skateparks are very flexible in design, so any space can be used.

14. Building a skatepark and having skaters help maintain it will turn skaters into community activists.

15.  The old tennis court area at the community center is ugly, unused and an eyesore, so a skatepark will make it look beautiful and be usable.
